How to start online personal training

You do not need a big audience to start. You need a clear offer, a simple process and a few clients who get results.

1. Decide who you help

"Anyone who wants to get fit" is hard to sell. "Busy parents who want to get strong in three sessions a week" is easy to remember and easy to recommend. Pick a group you already understand, often the clients you coach best in person.

2. Build one simple offer

Start with one package. A common shape is a training program, a weekly check-in and message support, sold monthly with a minimum of three months so clients have time to see change. Write down exactly what is included and how quickly you reply.

3. Set a price

Work backwards. Decide what you want to earn, how many hours you can coach, and how long each client takes per week. If your in-person hourly rate is higher than your online price per hour worked, either raise the price or reduce the time per client.

4. Choose your tools

Keep it light. You need a way to deliver programs, collect results, talk to clients and take payment. Spreadsheets and chat will do for the first few clients. Move to a coaching app when follow-up starts eating your evenings.

5. Find the first clients

6. Build a repeatable week

Set fixed times for program updates and check-ins. A predictable week lets you take more clients without working every evening. See our list of check-in questions.

Common questions

How many clients do I need to start?

One. Many coaches start with a few existing clients, which lets you refine the process before you market it.

Do I need a qualification?

Rules and insurance requirements vary by country. Check what applies where you and your clients live.
