How to find a good personal trainer
A good trainer can change how you train for years. Here is how to find one who suits you.
1. Know what you want
Write down your goal, your budget and how often you can train. "Feel stronger and train twice a week" is enough. It helps a trainer tell you honestly whether they are the right person.
2. Decide between in person and online
- In person suits you if you are new to the gym or want someone beside you.
- Online suits you if you are comfortable training alone and want a plan and follow-up, often at a lower price.
- A mix of a few sessions in person and online follow-up works well for many people.
3. Where to look
- Ask friends who have had a trainer.
- Ask at your gym.
- Search locally and read reviews.
- Look at what trainers share online, and whether it feels sensible.
4. Questions to ask
- What education and insurance do you have?
- Have you worked with people like me?
- How do you follow up between sessions?
- How do you measure progress?
- What does it cost, and how do I cancel?
Warning signs
- Guaranteed results or fast fixes.
- Pressure to buy supplements or long contracts.
- The same plan for everyone.
- Medical advice outside what a trainer should give.
Try before you commit
Book a first session or a short trial. You should feel listened to. Once you have found your trainer, one shared app makes the work between sessions easier.
