How to stay consistent with training
Motivation comes and goes. Habits, plans and other people keep you going when it does.
Eight things that work
- Start smaller than you think. Two sessions you always do beat four you skip.
- Book it. Put your sessions in the calendar like any other appointment.
- Decide in advance. Know what you will do before you arrive.
- Have a bad-day plan. Ten minutes still counts. It keeps the habit alive.
- Make it visible. Log your sessions and watch the streak grow.
- Train with someone. It is harder to skip when someone is waiting. Start a challenge.
- Pick a goal with a date. A date makes the goal real.
- Get help. A trainer adds accountability.
When you miss a week
Everyone does. Do not try to make up for it. Go back to your normal plan, perhaps slightly lighter, and carry on.
Look back
On days when nothing feels easy, look at how far you have come.
Common questions
How long does it take to build a training habit?
It varies from person to person. Plan for months rather than weeks, and do not worry about a missed session.
How many times a week should I train?
Two or three sessions a week is a good start for most people. Choose a number you can keep up.
